Second Half Flurry Lifts UMass Lowell over Pace, 3-0

Sophomore M Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass.) and senior F Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, Mass.) scored goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half to lead UMass Lowell over Pace University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

The victory halted a three-match skid for UMass Lowell, which improved to 7-8-1 overall and 7-7-0 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday's regular season finale at home against Assumption (7:00).

Pace slipped to 5-12-0 overall and 3-12-0 in the Conference. The Setters cap the season Thursday at home against Mercy College (3:00).

The shutout was the sixth of the season for freshman GK Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.), who was tested once. Sophomore GK Courtany Hagen had seven saves for Pace.

After several chances in the first half, UMass Lowell broke the 0-0 deadlock 1:34 into the second half when sophomore F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) broke free down the right side and cut to the middle, then dropped off to Costa on the right, who beat a defender and Hagen to the near post.

The River Hawks continued to pressure and it paid off in the 57th minute when freshman Sarah Raye (Salem, N.H.) possessed from the right side and passed to Bozzella cutting to the middle. Bozzella settled and touched over Hagen into the top right 90 for a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore M Amy Cramer (Marlboro, Mass.) capped the scoring in the 76th minute when she directed a corner kick off her knee from sophomore M Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass.) inside the right post.

The River Hawks outshot the Setters 25-1 overall and 10-1 on target.
