No. 2 River Hawks Tally Another Shutout with 3-0 Win Over Saint Michael's

Oct. 23, 2010

Box Score

Senior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the way with three points (1g, 1a) in No. 2 UMass Lowell’s 3-0 victory over Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10 Conference action in Colchester, Vt. on Saturday afternoon.

The River Hawks improve to 15-0 on the year with an unblemished 5-0 mark in conference play, while Saint Michael’s falls to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in NE-10 action.

Just over 12 minutes into the tilt, Macy looked to create some offense and put her team on the board, but Purple Knight goalkeeper Jackie Stacey dove at the forward, forcing her to flip the ball to classmate Lizzy Ales (Arlington, Mass.) who was ready for the pass and tipped it in to put UMass Lowell up 1-0.

The River Hawks, who out-cornered Saint Michael’s 10-4 in the game, were able to capitalize on an opportunity in the 30th minute of play, as junior Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H.) stopped an inbound pass and set up Macy for a one-timer just inside the circle.  UMass Lowell held onto its 2-0 lead entering the break, after Macy captured her conference-best 20th goal of the season.

Before the game wrapped up, however, senior Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, Mass.) gave her squad an insurance goal, creating her own play by dribbling in the circle and sending a bullet to the back of the cage in the 66th minute of play.

The River Hawks held the distinct 21-2 edge in shots in the game, while freshman goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) recorded her 12th shutout of the year and UMass Lowell extended its shutout streak to 525:28. Stacey made 10 stops in the game, allowing three goals.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Wednesday evening, heading to Easton, Mass. for a game against conference foe No. 6 Stonehill College at 7:00 p.m. The teams met earlier this season, as the River Hawks captured a 4-0 victory on Cushing Field on Sept. 22. Both teams are currently undefeated in Northeast-10 play.
