Franklin Pierce broke a 2-2 deadlock with two goals in the last five minutes to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-2, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash at Sodexho Field.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-5-1 overall and 3-4-0 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday night’s home match with Saint Michael’s (7:00). The win was the third straight for Franklin Pierce, which improved to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Conference.

UMass Lowell fell behind 2-0 after 18 minutes, but stormed back in the second half when sophomore F Keanna Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) scored her fourth goal in her last three matches. In the 67th minute, senior F Brianne Bozzella (Wilmington, Mass.) found Santos at the top of the box, which she turned and neatly tucked into the upped left 90 of the goal.

“Keanna is working hard defensively and working hard to create chances,” said UML Head Coach Elie Monteiro. “She’s putting those chances away, which is helping us a lot.”

Sophomore M Gia O’Connor (Dracut, Mass.) leveled in the 73rd, when she headed home a corner kick by sophomore M Amy Cramer (Marlboro, Mass.). O’Connor had replaced junior M Maddy Bissaillon (Merrimac, Mass.) just seconds before.

When overtime seemed imminent, senior M Shona Franklin at the top left corner of the box and steered an attempt past freshman G Micaela Butlin (Milton, Mass.) for the winner. Following a corner kick by junior M Aya Noguchi, freshman F Jannice Sundqvist tapped home out of a scramble for an insurance goal in the 90th minute.

“We made some individual mistakes, but we had a great response with two great goals in the second half,” said Monteiro. “Things are starting to click offensively, but we need to work on eliminating the mental errors we’re making in our defensive territory.”

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the eighth minute when junior F Amanda Panaro ran onto a through-ball from senior M Snezana Stojkovic and tucked home. Panaro added her second in the 19th minute when she finished a cross from junior M Tori Gikas at the six-yard box.

UMass Lowell outshot Franklin Pierce 13-7 overall and 7-6 on frame. Butlin had two saves while junior Jocelyn Leon had five saves.
