The River Hawk volleyball club dropped a 3-1 decision to St. Rose College on Saturday for their first Northeast-10 loss of the year. Despite the defeat, UMass Lowell saw a great performance from senior Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) who had 12 kills and five total blocks.
The loss drops the River Hawks' record to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Golden Knights improve 4-11 on the campaign and 2-3 in NE-10 play.
"St. Rose played a strong game," said head coach Karen McNulty. "We had our chances and we just didn't capitalize.
"When we executed our game plan we won points. We did some nice things defensively and I thought we blocked well. We need to just put a more consistent effort on the court tomorrow at LeMoyne."
UMass Lowell started slow in the opening frame, hitting .108 in a 23-25 loss. Coscia tried to carry the load with four kills and she was help by Trina Carroll (Hampton, N.H.) who had two of her own on four attempts. St. Rose proved sharp early as Kelly Ryan (Pine Bush, N.Y.) and Kayleigh Quinn (Wilton, Conn.) had 5 and 4 kills, respectively.
The River Hawks snapped back in the second set, charging to a 25-11 victory on a .421 hitting percentage. Coscia had four more kills and two blocks while Kristina Wiltjer (San Diego, Calif.) dished out eight assists and served two aces.
The Golden Knights proved resilient, responding with a 22-25 win in the third frame. Both team's offenses were inefficient and UMass Lowell struggled with attack errors in a pivotal loss.
The River Hawks could not rebound, falling 21-25 in the final set. Carroll picked up two more kills and Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) added three blocks.
For the day, Coscia had a match-best 12 kills and five blocks. Wong and Carroll each tallied six kills, while Wong also added five blocks. Wiltjer finished with 28 assists, eight digs and three aces.
Freshmen Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) and Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) each tallied double-digit digs, with 17 and 10, respectively.
St. Rose was led by Ryan with 10 kills and four blocks.
The River Hawks have one last stop on their five-game road stand as UMass Lowell travels to LeMoyne in Syracuse, NY on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
