Freshmen Max O'Brien (North Andover, Mass.) placed 28th and Matt Hernon (Mansfield, Mass.) took 35th to lead an abbreviated UMass Lowell cross country lineup at the Keene State Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Virtually all of UMass Lowell's top runners were rested this week in preparation for next Saturday's New England Championship (Franklin Park, 10:00 a.m.).
The men's race drew 86 runners representing nine colleges while the women's race drew 92 runners representing nine schools. Dartmouth captured both the men's and women's team titles.
O'Brien ran the five-mile course in 28 minutes, 8 seconds while Hernon was close behind in 28:06. Freshman Steve Fitzsimmons (Methuen, Mass.) used the race as the day's workout as he ran only the first three miles in 15:48 before withdrawing.
Similarly, sophomore Nicole Skotz (Tewksbury, Mass.) ran only the first two miles of the race in 12:28 before exiting the field.
Freshman Neha Bhatia (Westford, Mass.) placed 29th in the women's 5K in 21:31.
