River Hawks Sharp on Day Two to Place 15th at New England Championship

Graduate Patrick Bean (Fitchburg, Mass.) shot rounds of 79 and 77 (156) to lead UMass Lowell to 15th place at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship Monday and Tuesday at The Captain's Golf Club.

 

UMass Lowell struggled to a 325 on Monday but regrouped to score a 309 (634) Tuesday behind Bean's five-over 77 and a 76 by seniors Thomas Ayala (East Taunton, Mass.) and Anthony Ullo (Leominster, Mass.). The River Hawks placed ninth among Division II and III colleges and fifth among its Division II counterparts.

Ayala, who placed in a tie for 44th, shot an 81 Monday to score a two-round 157 while Ullo, who carded an 84 Monday, placed tied for 73rd with a 160.

Sophomore Travis Kellegrew (Chelmsford, Mass.) shot rounds of 81-80--161 to place tied for 80th while freshman Steve Aghiarian (Medford, Mass.) shot an 88-86--174 to finish tied for 152nd.

The University of Rhode Island won the team title with a collective nine-over 297-288--585 edging the University of Connecticut (300-286--586) by a single stroke. Central Connecticut placed third with a 300-293--593.

Husson College of Maine placed sixth overall with a 308-305--613 to lead all Division II and III schools.

Adam Vaccari of the University of Connecticut earned medalist honors with a 143, including a four-under 68 Tuesday, defeating Kevin Josephson of Central Connecticut on the second playoff hole.
