River Hawk volleyball fell in three sets at New Haven on Friday night. With offense at a premium, senior Sarah Coscia (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the way with seven kills and three blocks.
The loss drops UMass Lowell to 9-8 on the season and 4-3 in the Northeast-10. The Chargers get back on track with the win, improving to 15-2 overall and 8-0 in conference play.
The River Hawks kept the first set close before falling 18-25. Senior Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the attack with three kills and two digs. Freshman Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) was also strong, tallying six digs.
UMass Lowell had similar results in the second set with a score of 19-25. Coscia scored three kills and a block while setter Kristina Wiltjer (San Diego, Calif.) had five assists and four digs.
New Haven squashed any chance of a rally, putting the River Hawks away, 18-25, in the final frame. Coscia added two more kills and a pair of solo blocks, but the offense sputtered, managing only five kills as a team.
In addition to Coscia's strong play, Wiltjer finished the match with 18 assists, eight digs and five kills. Eddy tallied a team-high nine digs.
Looking to put the loss behind them, the River Hawks return home to battle Southern Connecticut St. on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. while hosting "Dig for the Cure". The event aims to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
