Graduate Patrick Bean (Fitchburg, MA) and senior Anthony Ullo (Leominster, Mass.) each placed in the top 10 to lead the UMass Lowell men's golf team to a share of second place at the Southern New Hampshire University Invitational Sunday and Monday at the Country Club of New Hampshire.
Despite being limited to four players Sunday, UMass Lowell shot a 323 to place fourth but rebounded with a 310 Monday for a collective score of 633, good for second behind Assumption (316-315--631) and even with Manhattan College (319-314--633). The score of 310 was the low team round for the Tournament.
Franklin Pierce placed fourth with a 324-313--637 while Bentley took fifth with a 316-325--641. Saint Anselm (327-318--645), the host Penmen (329-337--666) and Saint Michael's (340-334--674) rounded out the field.
The result marked the second straight year UMass Lowell finished runner-up at the Invitational. The River Hawks won the team title in 2007.
"In the long run, we helped ourselves," said UML Head Coach Gary Mucica. "We ended up with five wins and one loss since there were seven Division II schools. The kids put on a great show today and almost pulled out a victory. Clearly this puts us in pretty good shape before we break for winter."
UMass Lowell is ranked No. 8 in the latest NCAA East Region Poll.
Bean placed in a tie for sixth individually as he shot consecutive rounds of six-over-par 78 for a 156 while Ullo carded rounds of 80-79--159 to lead the River Hawks.
Sophomore Travis Kellegrew (Chelmsford, Mass.) placed in a tie for 20th as he shot a 77 Sunday but struggled to an 87 Monday (164) while freshman Steve Aghiarian (Medford, Mass.) improved from an 88 Sunday with a 77 Monday to place tied for 23rd.
Senior Thomas Ayala (East Taunton, Mass.), who was limited to only one round, carded a four-over 76 Monday.
B.J. Powers of Franklin Pierce earned medalist honors with a 73-80--153. Powers won a playoff against Assumption's Ryan Myers, who shot rounds of 76-77-153.
UMass Lowell wraps the fall season next Sunday through Tuesday at the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Tournament at The Captain's Golf Club in Brewster, Mass.
