Sophomore F Kelly Meredith and junior G Molly Griffiths each scored 18 points as Assumption College defeated UMass Lowell, 88-55, Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball clash at the Laska Gymnasium.
The loss was the second straight for UMass Lowell, which slipped to 7-5 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s home clash against New Haven (2:00). Assumption improved to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the Conference.
Freshman G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, CT) led the River Hawks with 16 points – hitting 4 of 8 attempts from 3-point range – while senior F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) added 15 points as she converted 6 of 10 field goals (2 of 2 from long range) and a free throw.
Meredith also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Greyhounds and shot 5 for 7 from the floor and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Griffiths converted 6 of 9 field goals, including all five of her 3-point attempts, grabbed six rebounds and dished five assists.
Senior F Kayla Parker chipped in 15 points (6-12 FGs) and grabbed seven rebounds while freshman G Katy Howard dished nine assists in addition to scoring nine points.
The Greyhounds shot .508 from the field (31-61) and .556 from 3-point range (10-18) while UMass Lowell struggled to .311 shooting (19-61) and .389 from long range (7-18).
Assumption also built a 48-29 advantage on rebounds (15-11 offensively).
Assumption opened the game with a 22-5 lead – fueled by seven points from Parker and six from Howard – and never looked back en route to a 58-30 halftime cushion. The Greyhounds shot a collective .538 (21-39) for the half while UMass Lowell struggled to a .333 clip (11-33).
