Junior G Lynsey Timbrouck scored 19 points as the College of Saint Rose defeated UMass Lowell, 70-59, Saturday afternoon, in a Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball tilt at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
The loss halted a four-game winning streak for the River Hawks, who slipped to 11-6 overall and 7-6 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday's home clash against Pace (5:30). Saint Rose improved to 9-9 overall and 8-5 in the Conference.
Senior F Jen Valente (Prospect, CT) led UMass Lowell with 13 points and four rebounds while freshman C Sarah Bennett (Newark, OH) added a season-high 10 points, hitting 4 of 6 field goal attempts. Freshman G Bianca Simmons (Middletown, CT) also chipped in 10 points, three assists and three steals.
Timbrouck converted 5 of 7 field goals and 9 of 10 free throws while sophomore G Ola Shajuyigbe added 14 points and four rebounds, converting 8 of 8 free throws off the bench.
Sophomore F Ali Johnson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Knights.
The River Hawks led at the break, 33-30, but committed 16 (of their 25) turnovers in the second half, enabling the Golden Knights (19 turnovers) to post a 15-8 lead on points off miscues.
Saint Rose also enjoyed a 26-9 advantage from the free throw line.
UMass Lowell led 46-39 with 14:46 left to play, but the Golden Knights used a 16-4 run to snatch a 55-50 lead with 5:17 left to play. Timbrouck led the run with five points while senior G Elizabeth Buckley hit a key 3-point shot.
The run was the result of a dry spell for the River Hawks, who went 8:15 without a field goal (0 for 6) and committed 12 turnovers.
UMass Lowell cut the lead to 65-59 when Simmons converted a conventional 3-point play with 32.6 seconds remaining, but Saint Rose converted 6 of 6 free throws the rest of the way to seal the win.
