Leading the River Hawk hockey team (12-7-2, 6-4-2 HE) to a win and a tie this weekend, junior forward Scott Campbell (Navan, Ont.) was named the Athletic Republic Co-Player of the Week by the conference office on Monday.
Campbell, who shares the honor with Bobby Butler of New Hampshire, tallied five points on a goal and four assists in two tough Hockey East road games. UMass Lowell tied the Wildcats, 2-2, on Friday before beating Northeastern, 6-5, in overtime on Saturday, live on NESN.
The announcement marks the fifth time the River Hawks have been honored by Hockey East this season. Previously, Nick Schaus (Buffalo, NY), Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.) and David Vallorani (Hamilton, Ont.) were named the Hockey East Player of the Week on Nov. 9th, Nov. 23rd and Dec. 7th, respectively. Carter Hutton (Thunder Bay, Ont.) earned the Defense Player of the Week honor on Jan. 5th, 2010.
In the tie at New Hampshire, Campbell assisted on both UMass Lowell goals. Each time Campbell set-up teammate Ryan Blair (Ashburn, VA) with shots that were either redirected or knocked in on second chance opportunities.
The Navan native shined again against the Huskies, scoring once and assisting on two other goals. Campbell's goal was the lone score during the second period, giving the River Hawks a 4-1 lead at the time.
On a shot attempt by
Nick Schaus (Buffalo, NY), Campbell cut the puck off just before the net and went around the surprised goaltender for the score.
Campbell came up big again in overtime, starting the breakout that would win the game with seconds left. The Huskies turned over the puck and Campbell snapped a pass up to Kory Falite (Billerica, MA) as he tore through the neutral zone. Falite found Michael Scheu (Buffalo, NY) at the net front for a chip-in over goaltender Chris Rawlings to win the game.
For the season, Campbell is tied for the River Hawk lead with 20 points and is second on the team with 13 assists.
Campbell and the rest of the River Hawks will take part in a home-and-home series with rival UMass Amherst next weekend. Friday night's the game will be played at the Mullins Center, before UMass Lowell returns to the Tsongas Arena on Saturday for the River Hawks' first home game of 2010.
