Box Score

Seven different River Hawks scored in No. 2 UMass Lowell’s non-conference victory over No. 9 Mansfield on Saturday afternoon at the University of Scranton.

Senior co-captain Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) netted a pair of goals and added an assist in the victory.  She put constant pressure on Mansfield, tallying an astounding 11 shots on goal on the afternoon.

Sophomore defender Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, N.H.) opened scoring for the River Hawks by converting a penalty stroke just over eight minutes into the game (8:16).  She made an impact on both ends by also making a crucial defensive save later in the half to keep UMass Lowell ahead of the Mountaineers.

The River Hawk lead stretched to two after Abby Auld (Waltham, MA) brought the ball up the length of the field, leading a two-on-one rush, finding Moulton at the top of the circle.  Moulton forcefully chipped the ball past the goalkeeper for her first goal of the game in the 12th minute of play (22:51).

The Mountaineers retaliated 11 minutes later (11:09) as Danielle Hackenberg (Danville, PA) put the Mountaineers on the board.

Ashley Smith (Killingworth, CT) cleared the ball out of the River Hawks’ defensive circle, finding Moulton at the midfield.  Moulton dribbled the ball up to the offensive zone, with a shot right on target that was tipped in by Northeast-10 Player of the Week Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) in the 32nd minute of play (2:47).

Mansfield closed out the first half, pressuring the UMass Lowell net, as Kristy Tutorow (Shickshinny, PA) her first of the game with 40 seconds left on the clock.

Moulton continued her dominant play, opening the second half with a goal in the 38th minute of play.  She took a shot and grabbed her own rebound off the goalkeeper’s pads, lifting the ball for her second goal of the afternoon.

In the 41st minute of play, Moulton took a shot from the right side that brought the Mansfield goalkeeper out of position and Auld grabbed the rebound, sneaking the ball in behind her through the left corner for her first goal of the season.

Kristyn Grunza (Nicholson, PA) kept the Mountaineers in the game, netting a goal 1:15 later, making the score 5-3 in favor of the River Hawks.

UMass Lowell began to break the game open after Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) game-winner in the 50th minute of play (19:06).  Kayla Littig (Carver, MA) took a shot from the top of the circle off of the penalty corner, but when it was blocked, she grabbed her own rebound and found an open Ales.

Thirty-six seconds later, Macy had a shot tipped away by a defender in the 51st (18:30) minute of play.  Classmate Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) found the loose ball and scored the River Hawks’ seventh goal of the game, making it 7-4.

Mansfield wasn’t done fighting yet, though, as Tutorow netted her second of the game in the 54th minute of play.

Liz Day (North Andover, MA) sealed the deal, as Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) brought the ball in from the corner, centering to Day at the top of the circle, where she had a clear shot through the defenders into the goal for UMass Lowell’s eighth and final tally of the afternoon.

In a last attempt to level the score, Grunza scored her second goal of the day, but it was not enough, as the final score was 8-5 in favor of UMass Lowell.

Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) got the win for the River Hawks, her fourth of the year, before Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) relieved her for the final 10:16 of play.  They combined for ten saves on the afternoon.  The River Hawks outshot their opponent 34-21 on the afternoon.

UMass Lowell returns to action on Tuesday night, taking on Southern Connecticut at 7:00 p.m. on Cushing Field.
