The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks (10-1, 3-0 NE-10) defeated the Assumption College Greyhounds (2-7, 1-3 NE-10), by a score of 6-1, in a Northeast-10 Conference game at home on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field.
Junior forwards Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) and Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) notched a goal and an assist each, while midfielder Liz Day (North Andover, MA) assisted on a pair of goals.
The game was scoreless until Enaire opened scoring in the 23rd minute of play (22:21) after she found a pass from Abby Auld (Waltham, MA) in a crowded offensive circle.
Assumption quickly retaliated with a goal by Brittany Boyle (Grafton, MA) in the 29th minute of play (28:22).
Five minutes later, UMass Lowell took a lead it would not relinquish after Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) netted her sixth goal of the season. Macy had the ball in the left corner of the circle before centering it to Ales who found the net through a crowd. The River Hawks held onto the 2-1 lead going into the second half.
Auld netted her fourth goal of the year, assisted by Day in the 44th minute of play (43:25) to make it a 3-1 game. Day took a shot from just outside the top of the circle and Auld tipped it in from the right side of the cage.
Less than five minutes later, Macy added another goal, her 13th of the season, to bring the River Hawks ahead by three. Macy’s goal in the 48th minute of play (47:48) was assisted by Enaire off a penalty corner.
Midfielder Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) netted her second goal of the year, assisted by freshman Emily Painten (Walpole, MA) off the penalty corner in the 52nd minute of play (51:25) for UMass Lowell’s fifth goal of the game.
Freshman Sarah Wilcox (Old Town, ME) tallied the final River Hawk goal of the afternoon, her first collegiate goal, assisted by Day. Day brought the ball up field and passed from the top of the circle to the right side, where Wilcox had a clear drive to the goal.
UMass Lowell outshot Assumption 29-8 on the afternoon and held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) earned her third victory of the year for her play in the first half, stopping two of the three shots she faced. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) made a save in the first half during the Greyhounds’ penalty stroke opportunity in the 10th minute of play (9:41) and went on to have a shutout second half, facing no shots from Assumption.
Assumption netminder Danielle Luongo (Northboro, MA) made nine saves on the 15 shots she faced on the afternoon.
The River Hawks return to action next Saturday when they travel to Southern Connecticut for an NE-10 tilt against the Owls at 1:00 p.m.
