582 ...and Counting: A Conversation with Jamie Gillis - September 24, 2009

Senior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) stopped four shots en route to her fifth straight clean sheet as UMass Lowell and Southern New Hampshire University battled to a 0-0 deadlock in double overtime Wednesday night in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer match at George J. Larkin Field.

The draw extended UMass Lowell’s unbeaten streak to six matches as the River Hawks take a 5-2-2 overall clip (5-1-1 in the NE-10) into Saturday’s home clash against American International College (1:00).

Southern New Hampshire stands at 3-5-2 overall and 1-3-2 in the Conference.

Gillis halted all four SNHU attempts as the River Hawks enjoyed the run of play, evidenced by a 16-8 shots advantage (7-4 on target) and 4-0 on corner kicks.

The shutout marked the fifth of the season for Gillis and 29th of her career and extended UMass Lowell’s streak of shutout minutes to 582, a perpetual school record.

The River Hawks had a host of chances to go ahead, the best chance in the 58th minute when the Penmen were whistled for a handball in the box. However, goalkeeper Stef Young lunged to the right to snuff the penalty kick by senior D Ella Merullo (Wakefield, MA).

UMass Lowell also hit the post on two occasions in the second half, the first from freshman F Taylor Hartmann (Feeding Hills, MA) in the 68th and the second time in the 100th minute from sophomore D Erin Fleury (Princeton, MA).
