Box Score

The No. 5 UMass Lowell River Hawks defeated the Merrimack Warriors, 2-1, in North Andover on Tuesday afternoon, capturing their second Northeast-10 Conference game of the year.

Junior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) netted both River Hawk goals, one in each half, to secure UMass Lowell’s victory. With the win, they improve to 9-1 on the year with a 2-0 mark in Northeast-10 play.

Macy’s first goal came in the 20th minute of play (19:50) as she received a pass from midfielder Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, MA), then turned and fired on net for her tenth goal of the season.

Merrimack quickly retaliated, though, as Jaclyn Germano (Westwood, MA) scored her eighth goal of the year in the 23rd minute of play (22:25). The teams stayed knotted at one apiece through the remainder of the first half.

Macy broke the tie with the only other goal of the game, in the 59th minute of play (58:21). Midfielder Molly Clay (Rockport, MA) took a shot and Macy was standing by to tip it in for the game-winner.

The River Hawks outshot their opponent 31-12 and only allowed seven shots on goal in the contest. They also owned an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Goalkeeper Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) started for UMass Lowell and made three saves, allowing one goal in 35 minutes of play. She was relieved by Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) in the second half, allowing zero goals on three shots on goal.  Carbon earned the win, her seventh of the year.

Warrior netminder Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) made 15 stops in the losing effort, while Merrimack fell to 6-5 on the year with a 1-1 record in NE-10 games.

The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, hosting the Assumption Greyhounds at 1:00 p.m on Cushing Field, for their third conference match of the season.
