Senior G Jamie Gillis (North Billerica, MA) stopped three shots en route to her fourth straight shutout as UMass Lowell and the University of Bridgeport played to a 0-0 deadlock in double overtime Sunday night in a non-conference women’s soccer match.
The draw halts UMass Lowell’s win streak at four but extends its unbeaten skein to five matches as the River Hawks stand at 5-2-1 entering Wednesday’s match at Southern New Hampshire (7:00).Bridgeport is currently 4-0-3.
Gillis, along with the defense of seniors Kathleen Strazzere (Wilmington, MA) and Colleen Fitzpatrick (Tewksbury, MA), and juniors Ella Merullo (Wakefield, MA) and Michelle LaMar (Billerica, MA), shattered the previous school record for consecutive scoreless minute of 399, set in 2005.
The River Hawks, fresh off a 1-0 double overtime victory at Assumption Saturday, showed no signs of fatigue as they outshot the Purple Knights, 21-11 overall and 12-3 on target. Junior G Emelie Karstrom stopped all 12 shots for Bridgeport.
Both teams attacked often and had several chances. Senior F Kelly Soper (Auburn, MA) had a pair late in the second half, only to be snuffed by Karstrom on both attempts.
The shutout also marked the 28th of Gillis’ career, a perpetual school record.
