Audio Recap - Two Wins on a Wednesday - Field Hockey and Men's Soccer - September 2, 2009
The No. 2 UMass Lowell River Hawks’ offense exploded with a five-goal night in a 5-1 victory over Merrimack in non-conference action on Wednesday night at home.
Northeast-10 Player of the Week Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) led the River Hawks with two goals and an assist on the night, while senior co-captain Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) and junior midfielder Jaime Hadley (Chelmsford, MA) each had a goal and an of assist on the night.
Moulton opened scoring in the fourth minute of play (31:19), after Hadley grabbed a rebound and dished the pass across the cage.
Merrimack retaliated minutes later, as Jenna Barbato (Watertown, MA) got the Warriors on the board in the 8th minute of play (26:55).
It didn’t take long for the River Hawks to pour on the offense, though, as a goal by Hadley started to open up scoring. Macy took a shot on the goalkeeper’s pads and grabbed her own rebound before passing it to Hadley for the goal in the 21st minute of play (14:49).
Forty-seven seconds later, Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) scored the River Hawks’ third goal of the game (14:02). Moulton brought the ball up the center of the field before passing to Enaire for the tally.
Less than two minutes later, Macy broke open the scoring with her first goal of the night, making it a 4-1 game in the 23rd minute of play (12:14).
In the final six minutes of the first half, Macy tallied her second of the night (5:52), fifth on the year, and was assisted by both Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) and Moulton.
UMass Lowell held a 28-5 shot advantage over the Warriors on the night, 19 of those coming in the first 35 minutes of play.
If the first half was defined by UMass Lowell’s offensive power, the second half highlighted their defensive capability. NE-10 Defensive Player of the Week Ashley Smith (Killingworth, CT) stripped the Warriors of the ball on multiple occasions to ensure play would remain in the River Hawks’ offensive zone.
UMass Lowell only allowed five shots in the game, only three reaching the goalkeepers. Liz Day (North Andover, MA) and Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, NH) both provided crucial clears for the River Hawks, keeping the four-goal lead safe.
Merrimack goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) made 16 saves for the Warriors in the losing effort. Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) got the win for the River Hawks, while Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) played the second half and made two saves.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon. They will look to extend their three-game win-streak, taking on No. 9 Mansfield at the University of Scranton at noon.
