The No. 3 UMass Lowell River Hawks (7-1, 1-0 NE-10) shut out St. Michael's College (2-5, 0-0 NE-10), 2-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon in Colchester, VT.
Sammy Macy's (Tewksbury, MA) goal in the eighth minute of play (7:48) proved to be the game-winner, while Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) added another goal late in the first half to cushion the River Hawks' lead.
Macy had three shots on goal in the game, but it was her strike off a pass from Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) on a penalty corner, that she one-timed for her ninth goal of the season.
Ales tallied her fourth goal of the year, unassisted, to close out the first half, in the 31st minute of play (30:25). The two-goal deficit proved too much for the Purple Knights to overcome, as the River Hawks grabbed their seventh win of the year.
Defensively, senior co-captain Laura Sullivan (Norwood, MA), who played the full 70 minutes, kept the River Hawks in the game, as St. Michael's began picking up intensity in the second half. They held the River Hawks to only four shots in the last 35 minutes, but Sullivan patrolled the defensive zone, keeping the Purple Knights to nine shots on the afternoon.
Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) and Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) split the duties in net, each playing 35 minutes and making three saves apiece. Hickey earned the victory for her shutout work in the first half.
St. Michael's netminder Meghan McLaughlin (Cape Elizabeth, ME) made six saves in the losing effort, while UMass Lowell outshot the Purple Knights 11-9 on the afternoon.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday, hosting St. Anselm College on Cushing Field, for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
