Audio Recap - Men's Soccer and Field Hockey Win
Junior F Stephen Potcner (Wilmington, MA) scored two goals as No. 22 UMass Lowell defeated the University of New Haven, 2-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer clash at Cushing Field.
With the victory, the River Hawks improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday night’s clash at Franklin Pierce. New Haven slipped to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Conference and host Saint Rose Wednesday at 4:00.
Potcner broke the drought in the 30th minute when senior M Jhony Valencia (Lowell, MA) steered a free kick from the left side which Potcner tapped inside the far post.
Potcner completed the brace in the 53rd when sophomore M Matheus Candido (Lowell, MA) crossed from the left side which Potcner timed well to bundle home.
UMass Lowell nearly added a third in the 89th minute when sophomore G J.J. Comeau (Wallingford, CT), who replaced sophomore G Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, CT) in the 81st minute due to an injury, cleared a volley at the top of the 18 yard box.
However, freshman M Ryan McLeod (Haverhill, MA) volleyed straight back on the New Haven goal, but his attempt was just cleared off the line by a Charger defender.
The River Hawks outshot the Chargers 15-6 overall and 6-1 on target. Creem had two saves while senior G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) was tested once.
