Soper Strike Lifts River Hawks Over New Haven, 1-0

Senior F Kelly Soper (Auburn, MA) scored the lone goal to lead UMass Lowell over the University of New Haven, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer clash at Charger Field.

With the victory, the River Hawks improved to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10 and host Saint Anselm Wednesday at 7:00. New Haven slipped to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Conference.

Soper scored the winner in the 12th minute when she possessed out of a scramble in front of the Charger goal and slotted home for her first of the season.

New Haven nearly equalized late in the first half when a cross from the deep right corner caromed off the crossbar and was cleared by the River Hawks.

New Haven had a slight edge on shots, 8-7, but the River Hawks outshot the Chargers 4-2 on target. Senior Jamie Gillis (Billerica, MA) had two saves, including one on a late header off a corner kick in the second half, en route to her first clean sheet of the season and 25th for her career.

Sophomore G Kim Taylor (Patchogue, NY) stopped three shots for New Haven.
