The No. 3 UMass Lowell River Hawks downed the Yellow Jackets of American International College, 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Cushing Field, in their first Northeast-10 Conference game of the year.

Junior forward Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) tallied five points on the afternoon behind a pair of goals and an assist, all coming in the first half of play. Classmate Lizzy Ales (Arlington, MA) netted the first two River Hawk goals to open scoring.

The River Hawks' first goal came in the 15th minute of play (14:05), as Macy made a pass across the cage to center the ball, finding Ales for the tap-in goal.

Just over a minute later, Ales grabbed a rebound off a Macy shot on goal, scoring her second of the game and bringing the lead to two in the 16th minute of play (15:16).

Macy widened the gap just 40 seconds later, with her seventh goal of the year, the eventual game-winner, assisted by Liz Day (North Andover, MA).

The duo struck again, as Day dribbled the ball up the center of the field, finding Macy edging towards the goal. Macy found herself in a one-on-one play, in the middle of the circle, as she faked a shot to the right to deceive the goalkeeper and netted her second goal of the game from the left side of the cage in the 26th minute of play (25:35). The game was 4-0 going into halftime.

American International began to narrow the gap after a goal by Amanda McLean (Branford, CT) in the 49th minute of play (48:27). After a penalty corner, McLean grabbed a rebound off a Lisa Duckles (Netcong, NJ) shot and tallied her third goal of the year.

Duckles went on to score on a penalty stroke in the 67th minute of play (66:15). The River Hawks held on, though, preserving the two-goal lead through the end of regulation.

Goalkeeper Kate Hickey (Medway, MA) earned the win after her play in the first half. Netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) made six saves on the afternoon, including coming in for an AIC penalty stroke in the first half.

The River Hawks outshot their opponents 29-14 in the contest, while Macy had nine shots on goal. UMass Lowell held the Yellow Jackets to just four shots in the first half. Yellow Jacket goalkeeper Kim Steiner (Little Falls, NY) earned the loss, but had 12 saves in the losing effort.

With the victory, UMass Lowell improves to 6-1 overall with a 1-0 mark in NE-10 play and the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-4 on the year, 1-1 in conference action.

The River Hawks return to action on Wednesday, heading to Colchester, VT for a non-conference tilt at St. Michael's College at 4:00 p.m.
