The No. 3 River Hawks (5-1, 0-0 NE-10) fell to No. 4 Stonehill in their first loss of the season, a 2-1 non-conference battle, in Easton, Mass. on Thursday night.
The Skyhawks struck first, as Courtney Foley (Wakefield, MA) scored in the 14th minute of play (13:08), but it wasn't long before the River Hawks knotted the game at one apiece.
Senior forward Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) netted the lone UMass Lowell goal of the game, assisted by defender Annie Hansbury (Plaistow, NH) in the 25th minute of play (24:41). Hansbury found her teammate at the top of the circle, where Moulton was able to drive the ball past the Stonehill goalkeeper.
The teams closed out the first half at a 1-1 stalemate, but the Skyhawks's Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, MA) tallied the game-winner in the 50th minute of play (49:14).
The River Hawks owned a 12-5 penalty corner advantage over their opponents and outshot the Skyhawks 10-6 in the game. UMass Lowell was held to just two shots in the second half, however, while Stonehill was limited to three shots per period.
Netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) made three saves in her first loss on the year; her record now stands at 5-1. Stonehill goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South Dennis, MA) made four saves in the game.
The River Hawks return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Cushing Field. They will take on American International College for their first Northeast-10 matchup of the season.
