Aug. 28, 2009

Box Score

Rookie Emily Painten (Walpole, MA) scored the game-winner for the River Hawks, while junior Sammy Macy (Tewksbury, MA) grabbed her first goal of the season and tallied nine shots as No. 2 UMass Lowell defeated Millersville, 3-0, Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at Cushing Field.

Senior co-captain Jaci Moulton (Baldwinville, MA) also scored for the River Hawks. UMass Lowell kicks off its season 1-0 with the win, while Millersville of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division, falls to 0-1.

Painten netted her first collegiate goal, the game-winner, in the 27th minute (26:56) of the first half. She grabbed the rebound off of a Moulton shot and opened scoring for the River Hawks.

"We have so many weapons off the bench that can come in and play any position and go on to score the game-winning goal," UMass Lowell head coach Shannon Hlebichuk said. "That's what [Painten] did as a freshman, in her first five minutes in a collegiate game. That says a lot for Emily's future."

UMass Lowell outshot the Marauders 15-4 in the first half, but Hlebichuk said the game took a turn in the second half. "I knew our fitness, desire and preparation from before preseason were major factors for us," she said. "That resulted in a two-goal second half."

In the 51st minute of play (50:14), Moulton netted her first goal of the year off a centering pass from classmate Kayla LeSage (Amesbury, MA). After LeSage's pass, Moulton found an opening at the left corner of the goal and snuck one by Millersville's Sarah Dickinson (Millersville, PA).

After a convincing shot from junior Katie Enaire (Amesbury, MA) out of the right corner, the River Hawks took a corner and peppered the net. Macy grabbed her own rebound off a shot and netted UMass Lowell's third goal of the game in the 56th minute of play (55:22).

The River Hawks outshot the Marauders 13-3 in the second half, which proved to be enough for the victory. Netminder Amy Carbon (Bellingham, MA) earned the shutout victory, stopping all four shots she faced. Dickinson recorded the loss for Millersville, but made 13 saves in the effort.

The River Hawks return to action on Sunday at noon, when they will host No. 3 Indiana University (PA) at Cushing Field.
