165 UMass Lowell Student-Athletes Named to 2009 Commissioner's Honor Roll

July 21, 2009

UMass Lowell, spurred on by another spectacular year in athletics, placed 165 student-athletes on the Northeast-10 Conference 2008-09 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, released Monday.

The Commissioner’s Honor Roll honors student-athletes who have met and/or exceeded a minimum 3.0 semester grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).

Due to a revision of the Conference’s academic awards program, the 2009 Commissioner’s Honor Roll is based only off the Spring 2009 semester. Beginning next year, the conference will release two Commissioner’s Honor Roll listings for both the fall and spring semesters.

Among UMass Lowell's 165 student-athletes were 26 who repeated the honors from last year or previous years, including three four-time honorees, eight three-time honorees and 12 two-time recipients.

Four-time honorees included seniors Sarah Brassard (Oxford, MA) of the women’s track and field team; Bridgette Hooker (Belmont, NH) of the women’s basketball team; and Missy Seeley (East Hampstead, NH) of the field hockey team.

Eight junior student-athletes made their third appearances on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, including Jenna Banks (North Attleboro, MA) and Sharikka Finley-Moise (Lexington, MA) of the women’s cross country and track and field teams; Mike Clem (Charlton, MA) and Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) of the men’s soccer team; Kelly Soper (Auburn, MA) and Elizabeth Garlo (Russell, MA) of the women’s soccer teams; Revital Carmon (Bat-Yam, Israel) of the women’s basketball team and volleyball standout Nichole Rondeau (Dracut, MA).

Topping the list was the UMass Lowell field hockey team which had 20 student-athletes cited to the Honor Roll, resulting in 87 percent of its roster. Also impressing was the women’s cross country/track and field team, which placed 33 athletes on the list, making for 79 percent of its roster.

Seventeen women’s soccer players were cited (63 percent) while nine athletes from the volleyball and women’s basketball rosters were also named (60 percent).

Concurrently, 18 members of the baseball team were cited to the Honor Roll – 53 percent of its roster – while nine men’s basketball players (75 percent) and 12 members of the men’s soccer team (46 percent) were also named.

Rounding out the men’s sports was the cross country/track and field teams, which had 23 athletes honored (44 percent); and the golf team with seven members cited (54 percent).

Earlier this year, 10 members of the UMass Lowell hockey team were cited to the Hockey East All-Academic Team.

In another benchmark athletic year, four UMass Lowell teams – field hockey, men’s soccer, golf and men’s basketball, along with 15 track and field athletes and four relay teams – advanced to NCAA Championship competition

Additionally, UML finished the year 23rd in the 2008-09 NACDA/Learfield Directors’ Cup standings – tops among NE-10 schools and up from 32nd a year ago.
