The Cushing Field Complex, home of UMass Lowell's field hockey and track and field teams, is getting a facelift this summer.
Construction began in early June to build a new turf field for the 2008 Division II Field Hockey National Champion Runner-Up River Hawks, as well as resurface the track, improving both facilities for competitive events.
The facility, which houses the UMass Lowell track and field complex, as well as field hockey field and spectator bleachers, was first constructed in 2001 and opened in the spring of 2002. After seven seasons, both surfaces needed attention and improvements.
"Quality facilities ensure a positive experience for current student-athletes and play a crucial role in the recruiting process," said Athletic Director Dana Skinner.
The project is set to be completed in August, prior to the student-athletes' return to campus. The complex will re-open in plenty of time for the field hockey home opener on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. against Millersville.
Aside from serving as the home field for the River Hawks, the facility was the host site for the 2003, 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championship, as well as Northeast-10 Track and Field Championship in 2005, 2007 and 2009.
The upgrades promise to keep the complex competitive among its counterparts.
