UMass Lowell Earns Top Honors for Marketing Efforts at NACMA Convention

June 22, 2009

The UMass Lowell Department of Marketing and Promotions received two goal standards for its 2008-09 efforts Friday at the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) Convention at the World Marriott Resort.

The Department – spearheaded by Eric Allen, Assistant Director of Athletics for External Affairs, and Scott Donnelly, External Affairs Coordinator – received gold in the categories of Group III Single Day Attendance Promotion and Promotional T-Shirt Design.

The honors marked the 11th time over the last six years UMass Lowell was honored by NACMA for its marketing and promotional efforts. It was also the sixth straight year the department received plaudits for Single Day Attendance Promotion and the second time for Promotional T-Shirt Design.

“This is terrific and fitting recognition for all the support in our department, from the administrators to our student workers,” Allen noted. “We take great pride in the creativity and execution our promotional efforts each year.”

UMass Lowell’s Single Day Attendance Promotion was the result of its Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Night held with the Nov. 21 hockey game against Providence (a 6-1 win). On hand was the Abraham Lincoln Touring Museum was as well as the 16th U.S. president himself appearing in the lobby before the game and dropping the puck in the ceremonial faceoff.

Students of the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Lowell were invited to view the Touring Museum on Thursday, Nov. 20 as part of a unit of study. Each student created an Abraham Lincoln poster which was displayed in the Tsongas Arena lobby and was invited, along with their teachers, to the Nov. 21 game against the Friars.

Additionally, Abraham Lincoln bobbleheads were distributed to the first 1,000 entrants. Attendance for the game was 4,248, up from the UMass Lowell-Providence attendance figure of 2,012 the previous year.

The honor of Promotional T-Shirt Design centered on the design of the official 2008-09 Blue Fan Group shirt, the official student fan club of UMass Lowell athletics. Blue Fan Group t-shirts were distributed to each incoming freshmen as well as many other students and alumni throughout the year.

Also notable was Hockey East’s effort of Skating Strides, which earned silver medal honors in the Single Day Attendance Promotion category. UMass Lowell contributed the proceeds from a 50-50 raffle as well as the auction of a pink hockey stick, signed by each member of the team, to Hockey East’s breast cancer awareness effort.

Initiated in 2003, the NACMA Awards program honors outstanding achievement in marketing and promotions. Awards are presented in 13 categories, with each category divided into three groups based upon institution size and conference affiliations to promote fairness.

More than 700 entries were received for the 2008-09 year.
