Anthony Gallardo, a senior from Methuen, MA (Central Catholic H.S.), was named to the Division II Ping All-East Region Team, released on Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The honor is the latest of a slew of awards for Gallardo, who enjoyed his second straight year on the Ping All-Region Team. It is the result of his stellar finish at the NCAA East/Atlantic Super Regional May 21-23, at which he placed in a tie for 27th with rounds of 76-78-82—236.
In the fall, Gallardo was named to the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Division II Team after earning Division II medalist honors at the NEIGA Tournament at which he placed second overall with a 79-68—147.
Additionally, he was named to the Northeast-10 Conference Second Team as he placed in a tie for 13th with a 77-76—153 at the NE-10 Championship.
“After one year on the team he was elected captain not only for his on-course performance but for his leadership skills,” said UML Head Coach Gary Mucica. “Clearly he was a very important component of reaching the NCAA Regional the last two years.”
Gallardo was named the Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year on May 12 at the Department of Athletics Awards Banquet. He led the golf team with a sterling fall 2008 average of 75.29 and followed with a 79.80 clip this spring.
As a junior, fresh off transferring after a two-year stay at Iona College, he posted a 75.36 average for the fall and a 76.27 for the spring and led the River Hawks to the NCAA Regional for the first time since the program was reinstated in 2004.
“Anthony’s most important role was filling the shoes of Chris Menne (2004-06) after he graduated,” Mucica added. “And equally so, the challenge for us going forward will be to replace Anthony.”
Gallardo recently graduated with a 3.13 in management. He is the son of Tony and Anne Marie Gallardo of Methuen, MA.
