RINDGE, N.H. - Mike DiReda's (Shrewsbury, Mass.) three-run home run in the first inning proved to be the difference as Assumption College defeated UMass Lowell, 5-2, Friday night in the 2009 Northeast-10 tournament at Dr. Pappas Field.

The Greyhounds have won four straight and improve to 31-17-1. The River Hawks have dropped five of six. They fall to 25-20 with the loss.

The first inning was the difference in the game as Assumption plated four of its five runs on four hits on the night. DiReda provided the big hit in the inning - and the game - with a two out, three-run home run to right.

After back-to-back one-out singles by Mike Baillargeon (Worcester, Mass.) and Derek Migrants (Ayer, Mass.), Tim Scafidi (Worcester, Mass.) plated the first run of the game with a two-out single up the middle.

UMass Lowell starter Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) settled down after the tough first inning retiring 17 of the next 18 hitters he faced. Ramey, who had his record drop to 2-5 with the loss, threw 106 pitches, 73 for strikes.

Assumption starter Jeff Barbale (Charlton, Mass.) was equally as good, allowing just seven hits and striking out four over 7.2 innings on the mound. Barbale's pitch count reached 122 pitches, 82 for strikes. Barbale improved to 8-3.

The River Hawks were held off the board until the top of the seventh inning when they plated two runs on four hits. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) became just the third UML runner to reach second base when he led off the seventh with a double to left center.

Two batters later freshman right fielder Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) tripled to right, scoring Notargiacomo. Jacobs crossed the plate for the second run on a ground out by Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.).

Assumption added an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly. Shawn Frigon (Worcester, Mass.) doubled with one out, moved to third on a single from Baillargeon, and scored on a sac fly from Mike Foley.

With the loss the River Hawks will play top-seeded Franklin Pierce Saturday at 11:00 a.m. The Greyhounds next play Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against New Haven. Both games will be played at Dr. Pappas Field.
