RINDGE, N.H. - Kyle Vazquez (Berlin, Conn.) pitched 10 innings of shutout baseball and Jose Macias (Bronx, N.Y.) plated the game's only run in the 10th as Franklin Pierce shutout UMass Lowell, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in the first game of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at Dr. Pappas Field.
The Ravens improve to 31-15 overall and 22-6 with the win. The River Hawks have lost two straight. They fall to 24-17 overall and 15-13 in conference play.
Both starting pitchers went the distance in the game, pitching into the 10th inning. Vasquez allowed just three hits and struck out 15 to improve his record to 8-0 on the year.
UML's Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) took the tough-luck loss falling to 2-4 on the season. Ramey allowed just one run on seven hits over 9.1 innings pitched. He struck out eight and walked just two.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the 10th. Ben Benigno (Trumbull, Conn.) led off the inning with a single to center field. Two batters later he scored on Macias' RBI infield single.
Macias and Cody Kauffman (Blue Bell, Pa.) each had two-hit games for the Ravens. Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) was the only River Hawk with two hits.
UMass Lowell and Franklin Pierce conclude their doubleheader Saturday afternoon. They finish up their three-game weekend series Sunday at LeLacheur Park at 11:00 a.m.
