Baseball: Bentley Edges UMass Lowell, 2-1

LOWELL, Mass. - Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) struck out 11 over nine innings on the mound, but Bentley edged UMass Lowell, 2-1, in 11 innings in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park Thursday night.

The Falcons snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to 18-12 overall and 9-4 in the NE-10. The River Hawks fall to 16-8 overall and 8-5 against the league with the loss.

Bentley had just four hits and scored one run in the first and the game-winning goal in the 11th. The River Hawks managed five hits, scoring their run in the bottom of the eighth.

Garret Stenhouse (Warwick, R.I.) put Bentley on the board in the top of the first inning when he hit a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for his third home run of the year.

The lead held until the bottom of the eighth when the River Hawks tied the game with a run on two hits. Chriss Soldi (Clinton, Mass.) plated the tying run with a single to left field. The run-scoring single scored Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.), who reached base on a fielder's choice.

The game remained 1-1 until the top of the 11th when the Falcons scored the winning run on one hit and one walk. Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass.) led off the inning with a walk. Three batters later he scored on a single from Mike DeCosta (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, Mass.) picked up the win for Bentley. He pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Falcons, striking out four and allowing just one hit.

Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) took the loss for UML. He allowed one run on one hit in two innings.

Neither starter figured into the decision. Haley, UML's starter, fanned 11 over nine innings of work. He allowed just the one run on three hits. Bentley starter

Chris Dupay (Scotia, N.Y.) allowed just one run, an unearned run, over 7.1 innings. He struck out seven.

The River Hawks return to the field Friday afternoon when they visit former Northeast-10 foe Bryant University. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. The Falcons are next in action Friday when they visit Franklin Pierce at 2:00 p.m.
