Senior Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) batted 3 for 6 and hit her 19th career home run to tie the school record as UMass Lowell split with Dowling College Thursday in a non-conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.
UMass Lowell won the opener, 8-4, while Dowling exacted revenge in the nightcap, 6-1.
With the split, the River Hawks stand at 4-21-1 overall entering Friday’s twin bill with C.W. Post (2:30). Dowling, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA East Region Poll, is currently 20-14 and visits Franklin Pierce Friday at 2:00.
Lajoie currently shares the all-time home run mark with former standout Laurie Tanguay (2005-08), who graduated last year. The milestone three-run shot highlighted a four-run sixth inning which enabled the River Hawks to put the opener out of reach.
Lajoie batted 2 for 3 with two runs and a walk while junior 2B Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA) batted 2 for 4 with two runs and a sixth-inning RBI double. Sophomore SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) batted 2 for 3 with one RBI.
Sophomore 2B Lisa Compitello (Bohemia, NY) batted 2 for 4 with one run while junior RF Kristina DeMeo (Bay Shore, NY) also hit 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI to lead Dowling. Senior 3B Stephanie Compitello (Bohemia, NY) went 1 for 3 with a two-run home run.
UMass Lowell erupted for four runs in the first inning when Hebert singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Freshman RF Paula Ruszkowski (Reading, MA), freshman 3B Caelyn Ford (Dracut, MA) and Rollo each had RBI singles in succession.
The Golden Lions pulled one back in the second when DeMeo reached home on a fielder’s choice; and added two more when Stephanie Compitello blasted a two-run shot to centerfield.
Sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) earned the win as she allowed six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out three to improve to 1-5. Sophomore P Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY) relieved Monroe in the fifth and scattered three hits, two walks, one earned run and two strikeouts to get the save.
Sophomore P Katie Cameron (Patchogue, NY) took the loss as she allowed 10 hits, eight runs (seven earned), three walks and two strikeouts to slip to 7-5.
In the nightcap, Dowling scored three runs in the four and fifth innings en route to the win. Freshman C Emily Slack (East Islip, NY) and freshman DH Deana Tortorici (Levittown, NY) each drew RBI walks while freshman SS Jessica Rogue (Warren Grove, NY) hit a sac fly to highlight the fourth inning.
The River Hawks pulled one back in the bottom half behind an RBI single by Ford, but the Golden Lions scored three more in the fifth, led by RBI singles from DeMeo and Slack, for a 6-1 cushion.
DeMeo batted 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI while Stephanie Compitello went 2 for 4 with one run.
Sophomore P Jamie Stalter (Bohemia, NY) improved to 4-0 as she allowed six hit, one run and one walk while striking out three.
Freshman Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA) took the loss (2-10) as she yielded six hits, six runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out eight over four innings.
