LOWELL, Mass. – Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) had two hits, drove in three runs and scored three times as UMass Lowell defeated Mercy, 15-6, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks have won five of their last six and improve to 16-7 on the year. The Mavericks have dropped five of six. They fall to 7-9 with the loss.
Jacobs was one of seven River Hawks with multiple hits. He was 2-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBI. Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.), Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.), Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) and Connor Burnham (Harwich, Mass.) also had two hits each.
J.T. Leary (Newburyport, Mass.) had a game-high three hits. He was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
After falling behind 3-0 after the top half of the first inning, the River Hawks plated 15 unanswered runs by the end of the third inning. They scored three runs in the first, four more runs in the second and eight in the third.
UML scored its three first inning runs on three hits, two walks and an error. Jacobs and Leary each had RBI singles in the first.
The River Hawks took the lead with four runs on five hits in the second. Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), Wallace and Leary plated three of the runs with consecutive RBI hits. Jacobs, who reached on a fielder’s choice scored on a double steal.
UML put the game away with the eight-run third inning. The River Hawks had seven hits and sent 13 men to the plate. Jacobs, Wallace and Burns each had two RBI hits in the frame.
Jacobs singled down the left field line to plate Burnham and Devlin. Two batters Jacobs came around to score on Wallace’s inside the park homerun to centerfield.
Burns capped the UML scoring with a two-run single to center.
The Mavericks had a short-lived lead after scoring three runs on five hits in the top of the first inning – they didn’t have another hit until the seventh inning.
The first four batters for Mercy reached base on singles. Three of them – Michael Ferrante (Long Beach, N.Y.), Vincent Tesoriero (Glen Head, N.Y.) and Matt Walsh (Staten Island, N.Y.) – came around to score.
Walsh and Ken Mundy each had run-scoring hits in the Mercy first.
Mercy added a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) earned his second win of the season to improve to 2-0. Monico allowed three runs on five hits – all coming in the first inning – over five innings of work. He struck out five.
Billy Dring (Mahopac, N.Y.) took the loss for Mercy. He lasted just 1.2 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits. He walked two and struck out two.
The River Hawks return to the field Thursday night when they host Bentley at LeLacheur Park. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. The Mavericks are next in action Thursday when they host Adelphi (3:30 p.m.).
