Owls Too Much for UMass Lowell in 6-0/3-1 Sweep

Sophomore Robin Priest drove in four runs a No. 24 Southern Connecticut defeated UMass Lowell, 6-0 and 3-1, Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill at Pelz Field.
With the losses, UMass Lowell slipped to 3-20-1 overall and 3-10-1 in the NE-10 entering Monday’s home doubleheader against Adelphi (3:00). The Owls improved to 19-5 overall and 8-2 in the Conference.
Freshman 3B Caelyn Ford (Dracut, MA) batted 3 for 6 while senior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) went 3 for 7 to lead UMass Lowell.
In the opener, freshman P Jayme Larson scattered five hits and a walk while striking out six to improve to 6-1.
The Owls took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning when they erupted for five runs. Junior DH Kerry Iacomini started the rally with an RBI single while Priest later hit a grand slam.
The loss spoiled a stellar effort by sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) who allowed two hits, two runs and three walks before being replaced by sophomore Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY).
In the nightcap, junior Megan Caporossi hit an RBI double while senior 1B Brittany Gandley followed with an RBI single to highlight a three-run third inning.
UMass Lowell pulled one back in the fifth when freshman LF Nikko Tremblay (Merrimack, NH) doubled and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice, but could muster no closer.
Lajoie batted 2 for 4 to lead the River Hawks. Freshman Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA) took the loss as she allowed five hits, three runs and three walks while striking out four over six innings.
Iacomini improved to 7-0, scattering six hits, one run and one walk while striking out five.
