SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Apr. 5, 2009) – Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.) capped a four-run ninth with an RBI single as American International rallied to defeat UMass Lowell, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at AIC Park.
The Yellow Jackets won for the third time in five games and improved to 5-18 overall and 3-8 in the NE-10 with the win. The River Hawks had their four-game win streak snapped. They fall to 15-7 overall and 8-4 against the league.
Shutout until the ninth inning, AIC rallied with four runs on six hits in the final frame. Dillon Fontaine (Amenia, N.Y.), Dan Fey (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kevin Farrell (Wilbraham, Mass.) singled to load the bases with no outs. Following a strikeout Anthony Arricheiello (Yonkers, N.Y.) got the Yellow Jackets on the board with a two-run single.
Dan Mooney followed with an RBI fielder’s choice. Ketterer capped the comeback with an RBI single down the right field line.
The River Hawks were held off the board until the eighth inning when they scored a single run on an RBI single from Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.).
UML plated two more runs in the top of the ninth to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) and Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) had RBI singles in the ninth.
Dan Nugent (Cambridge, Mass.) earned the win for AIC. He struck out five over 8.2 innings allowing three runs on 11 hits.
Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) worked a complete game for UML, but took the loss allowing all four ninth inning runs. Ramey pitched 8.2 innings and struck out six.
The River Hawks are scheduled to return to the field Monday afternoon for their makeup game with Bentley. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are next in action Monday to host Franklin Pierce (3:30 p.m.).
