NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) had three hits, but Southern Connecticut defeated UMass Lowell, 8-3, Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at The Ballpark at SCSU.
The Owls have won seven straight. They improved to 19-17 overall, 14-8 in the Northeast-10 with the win. The River Hawks had their two-game win streak snapped. They fell to 22-14 overall and 13-10 with the loss.
Southern Connecticut jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first and two more in the second.
Eric Schlitter (Guilford, Conn.) had the big hit in the three-run first with a two-run double. Karl Derbacher (Northford, Conn.) doubled home a pair of runs in the second as Southern Connecticut took a 5-1 lead through two innings.
The Owls added single runs in each the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The River Hawks scored single runs in the second, third and eighth. Southern Connecticut out-hit UMass Lowell 12-8 for the game.
Onorato led the way with three hits and two runs for UML. He was the only River Hawk with multiple hits.
Including Derbacher, the Owls had three players – Sam Greenberg (Guilford, Conn.) and Andrew Babb (Hopkinton, Mass.) – with two hits. Derbacher and Schlitter each had two RBI.
Justin Cox (Newburgh, N.Y.) got the win on the mound for the Owls. He allowed three runs on eight hits over eight innings of work. Cox, who improved to 4-3, struck out five and walked three.
Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) took the loss for UMass Lowell. Monico allowed six runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. He struck out six and walked four. Monico is 3-1.
The River Hawks return to action Saturday when they host Pace at noon. The Owls are next in action Saturday for a doubleheader at Stonehill.
