LOWELL, Mass. (Apr. 23, 2009) – Dallas Nunes (Easton, Mass.) pitched eight shutout innings, allowing just three hits, as UMass Lowell shutout Assumption, 3-0, in the second game of a Northeast-10 doubleheader at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks have won two straight and improve to 22-13 with the win. The Greyhounds have dropped two straight and fall to 22-15-1 with the loss.
Nunes allowed just three hits – two in the fourth and one in the fifth – to earn his second win of the season in his first start of the season. The freshman right hander threw 73 pitches, 51 for strikes, and struck out three.
Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the way offensively for the River Hawks. He reached base twice with one hit and a hit by pitch. Devlin scored the first two runs of the game for UML – one in the first and one in the fifth – and plated the third run with a fielder’s choice in the eighth.
Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.), who had two hits in the first game, picked up the RBI with a fielder’s choice in the first inning.
Joe Martini (Arlington, Mass.) took the loss for Assumption. He allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over five innings. He struck out three and walked two.
The River Hawks earned shutouts in both games, out-scoring the Greyhounds 12-0 in the two games. UML also out-hit Assumption 15-9 in the two games.
The River Hawks are next in action Friday afternoon at Southern Connecticut (3:30 p.m.). The Greyhounds next play Saturday for a doubleheader at Bentley.
