LOWELL, Mass. (Apr. 23, 2009) – Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) allowed just four hits and struck out five over eight scoreless innings as UMass Lowell defeated Assumption, 9-0, in the first game of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak. They improved to 21-13 overall and 13-9 in the NE-10. The Greyhounds had their four-game win streak snapped. They fell to 22-14-1 overall and 14-7-1 in conference play.
Haley improved his record to 5-0 with the win. He walked just two and did not allow a hit until the seventh inning. Haley has worked seven or more innings in six straight starts.
Offensively the River Hawks collected nine runs on nine hits. UML got on the board early with a single run on a sacrifice fly in the first.
The River Hawks added to their lead with three runs on just one hit in the third. All three runs scored on an error.
UML put the game away with four more runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth. J.T. Leary, Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) and Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) each had a run-scoring hit in the fifth.
The River Hawks added a run in the eighth on an RBI single from Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.).
Frank Flynn (Worcester, Mass.) allowed just eight runs, five earned, on seven hits on 4.1 innings.
Tim Keene (Berlin, N.H.) and von Kriegenbergh each had two hits in the game for UMass Lowell.
