Junior Doug Caves (Oxford, MA) was named UMass Lowell’s UPS Student-Athlete of the Week Tuesday after posting a pair of stellar results at Princeton University’s Larry Ellis Invitational.
The honor is a double of sorts as Caves was named the Northeast-10 Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Caves placed second overall in the 400 meter dash – behind only Mike Eddy of Princeton (46.72) – with a time of 46.77 seconds, which automatically solidified his place at the NCAA Championship with the fourth-fastest result in the country this season.
Caves’ result fell just short of his own school record of 46.49, set in 2007.
Caves also ran a 48.6-second leg on UMass Lowell’s 4X400 meter relay team which won the title with a time of 3:12.59 and improved to eighth place on the Division II list.
Caves will make his fifth appearance at the NCAA Championship on May 21-23 in San Angelo, TX.
Caves is among a select number of UMass Lowell athletes who will compete at the Penn Relays Thursday and Friday while the remainder enter the Brown Springtime Invitational Sunday.
