Senior P Jill Gagnon batted 3 for 4 with four runs and three walks as Merrimack defeated UMass Lowell, 2-0 and 8-0, Thursday in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Warrior Field.
With the losses, the River Hawks slipped to 3-16-1 overall and 3-6-1 entering Saturday’s twin bill at Pace (12:00) and Sunday’s at Southern Connecticut (1:00). Merrimack improved to 15-7 overall and 8-2 in the Conference.
In the opener, sophomore 2B Rachel Lozeau hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and Gagnon scored on a passed ball in the sixth to lift the Warriors.
Gagnon allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out seven to improve to 8-3.
The loss spoiled a stellar effort by freshman P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) who yielded four hits, four walks and two runs while striking out four to slip to 2-7.
In the nightcap, the Warriors scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to the win. Gagnon batted 2 for 3 with two runs and one RBI while freshman Monique Gosselin went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs.
Gagnon highlighted the first inning with an RBI single while Gosselin followed with a two-run shot.
Senior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) led UMass Lowell, hitting 2 for 2 while freshman C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) batted 1 for 2.
Senior P Vicky Cotter earned the win as she scattered three hits and no walks to improve to 5-2.
Freshman Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA) slipped to 1-6 as she surrendered five runs and a walk while striking out one in one inning.
