Sophomore Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) batted 3 for 5 and freshman Paula Ruszkowski (Reading, MA) went 3 for 6 but UMass Lowell suffered a sweep at Le Moyne, 3-0 and 12-4, Sunday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball twin bill at the Niland Athletic Complex.
With the sweep, UMass Lowell slipped to 6-29-1 overall and 5-16-1 in the NE-10 entering Thursday’s home clash against Stonehill (3:00). Le Moyne, currently in first place in the NE-10, improved to 29-9 overall and 17-3 in the NE-10.
In the opener, senior P Jennifer Farrelly allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out eight to improve to 13-4.
Freshman Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) scattered three hits, three runs and five walks while striking out seven.
Freshman Leah Ford belted a three-run home run in the third inning and the Dolphins never looked back.
In the nightcap, Le Moyne erupted for eight runs in the first inning highlighted by a two-run double by junior Kelly Schweikert and RBI singles by senior Caitlin O’Neil and Farrelly.
Down 10-0 in the fifth inning, UMass Lowell pulled four runs back behind an RBI single by senior CF Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, MA) and a three-run shot by freshman C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA), her fifth of the season, but could sneak no closer.
Boris, Hopkins and sophomore LF Hannah May (Hardwick, MA) each batted 2 for 2 while Ruszkowski hit 2 for 3.
Sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) took the loss as she surrendered seven hits, 10 runs (six earned) and three walks while striking out one in 1.1 innings.
Freshman P Brenna Klein improved to 1-1 as she allowed 10 hits, four runs and a walk in 3.2 innings.
