LOWELL, Mass. – Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) struck out a season-high 14 batters as UMass Lowell defeated Southern New Hampshire, 5-1, Tuesday night in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The River Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak with the win. They improved to 17-11 overall and 9-7 in the NE-10. The Penmen lost for the second straight night. They fell to 11-18-1 overall and 8-10-1 against the league.
Ramey threw 115 pitches, 85 for strikes. He struck out a season-high 14 and walked just one over eight innings. Ramey allowed just one unearned run on seven hits. He improved to 2-2 with the win.
Offensively the River Hawks scored five runs on eight hits. Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) each had two hits. Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Penmen scored their lone run in the top of the third. They had eight hits. Eric Pelletier (Beverly, Mass.), Tim Rines (Merrimack, N.H.) and Chris O’Neil (Chelmsford, Mass.) each had two hits for Southern New Hampshire.
Taylor von Kriegenbergh got UML on the board in the bottom of the second with a double off the left field wall. His double scored Peter Onorato, who led off the inning, with a single to left.
After the Penmen evened the score in the top of the third, Tim Keene put the River Hawks back on top with an RBI single up the middle.
Matt Jacobs and Jared Notargiacomo added to the UML lead with run-scoring singles in the bottom of the fourth. Jacobs singled to right, scoring T.J. Leary, who reached on a walk.
Notargiacomo plated Jacobs with a single to right center.
The Penmen loaded the bases on three singles in the top of the sixth, but Dustin Ramey got out of the jam striking out the side.
Brad Monroe (Hampton Falls, N.H.) took the loss for Southern New Hampshire. He allowed five runs on seven hits over seven innings of work. Monroe walked seven and struck out seven.
The River Hawks and Penmen conclude their two-game series Thursday afternoon in Manchester. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
