Freshman C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) batted 4 for 7 with three RBI as UMass Lowell and Southern New Hampshire University split Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at Penmen Field.
UMass Lowell won the opener, 7-5 while the Penmen exacted revenge in the nightcap, 6-0.
With the split, UMass Lowell is currently 5-24-1 overall and 4-10-1 in the NE-10 entering Thursday’s home clash against the University of New Haven (3:00). Southern New Hampshire is currently 13-19 overall and 11-7 in the Conference.
Sophomore DH Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) batted 3 for 7 with two RBI and one run while sophomore SS Stephanie Rollo (Dracut, MA) went 2 for 5 with a walk.
In the opener, UMass Lowell overcame a 4-2 deficit with two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth en route to the win.
In the fourth inning, Panarelli belted a two-run home run to knot the score at 4-4. Hopkins came through with a two-run single and Panarelli followed with an RBI single to highlight the fifth inning.
Panarelli batted 3 for 4 with three RBI while Hopkins went 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run. Freshman 1B Elissa Boris (Gardner, MA) batted 1 for 3 and gave UMass Lowell a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double.
Senior P Ashley Bernstein and senior CF Karissa Bettencourt each batted 2 for 4 with one RBI and one run for SNHU. Bettencourt hit an RBI double in SNHU’s four-run first inning while Bernstein highlighted with a solo home run. Senior C Michelle Maranto also hit 2 for 4.
Sophomore P Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) earned the victory to improved to 2-6 as she allowed eight hits, five runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out four in a complete game.
Bernstein (5-8) gave up nine hits, seven runs (five earned) and three walks while striking out one in five innings.
In the nightcap, SNHU broke a scoreless drought with six runs in the fifth inning and freshman P Kyla Puccini (4-3) allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Boris took the loss (2-12) as she carried a two-hitter into the fifth inning and struckout nine before being replaced by sophomore Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, NY). Schafler retired all four batters she faced in relief.
Senior LF Nicole Arpin started the rally in the sixth with a three-run shot and junior DH Melissa Pessotti followed with a two-run single to lead SNHU.
