SMITHFIELD, R.I. (Apr. 10, 2009) – Pat McKenna (Orange, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI as Bryant University defeated UMass Lowell, 14-8, Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at the Bryant Baseball Complex.

The Bulldogs have won three of four and improve to 24-10. The River Hawks have dropped to straight. They fall to 16-9.

McKenna was one of two Bulldogs with three hits on the day. Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Bryant as a team scored 14 runs on 18 hits.

Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) led the River Hawks offensively going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. UML had eight runs on 14 hits as a team.

The River Hawks opened a 3-0 lead before the Bulldogs scored 13 unanswered runs to lead 13-3 by the end of the fifth inning.

Wallace had one of one of three hits in the River Hawks’ three-run first inning. Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) also had singles in the opening frame.

All three scored when Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) reached on a bases loaded error by Bryant left fielder Connor Carignan (Norwich, Conn.).

Bryant answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the fourth to take the lead for the first time.

The Bulldogs put the game away with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, Conn.) had the big hit in the inning with a three-run triple to centerfield. Jamie Skagerlin (Holden, Mass.), Tim Norton (Barnstable, Mass.), Carignan and McKenna also had run-scoring hits in the fifth.

The River Hawks added single runs in the sixth and ninth, and three more in the eighth. The Bulldogs capped their scoring with a single run in the sixth.

John Michael Ryan (Worcester, Mass.) got the win for Bryant. He allowed four runs (one earned) on 10 hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out six.

Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) allowed seven runs on four hits in 1.2 innings in relief for UMass Lowell. He walked four and did not have a strikeout.

UML starter Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, Mass.) allowed two runs on five hits over three innings. He struck out one and walked two.

The River Hawks return to the field Saturday afternoon at Southern Connecticut for a Northeast-10 doubleheader. The Bulldogs are next in action Tuesday at Northeastern University.
