River Hawk Hockey Audio/Video News Update: Edwards Named All-American
LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore defenseman Maury Edwards (Rocky Rapids, Alta.) was named to the Reebok All-American Second-Team by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The announcement was made Friday night at the 2009 Frozen Four in Washington D.C.
Edwards is the 16th player in school history to be named an All-American and just the fifth in the program’s Division I history. He is the first since Ron Hainsey, a fellow defenseman, in 2001.
The award is just the latest of many post season honors Edwards has received. He was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star, to the Hockey East All-Tournament team and to the New England Division I Men’s All-Star Team.
Edwards finished second on the River Hawks and was third among Hockey East defensemen with 29 points. He was third on the team in goals (11), tied for second in assists (18) and tied for third in plus/minus (+11).
Edwards led the squad with 15 power play points and tied for the team-lead with seven power play goals. He was third on the River Hawks with six multi-point games in 2008-09.
Edwards was the first UML defenseman to score 10 goals since Hainsey in 2000-01. Hainsey was also the last River Hawks to be named a first team all-star before Edwards.
Edwards led Hockey East defensemen in scoring in league games with 25 points in 27 games. He had nine goals and 16 assists during Hockey East play.
Edwards, who had 17 points (6 goals, 11 assists) in the last 22 games, has been named to the Hockey East Weekly Top Performers list four times this year.
Edwards was named to the 2008 Hockey East All-Rookie Team.
Edwards helped the River Hawks to a 20-16-2 overall record in 2008-09. UML finished fifth in Hockey East with a 14-11-2 league mark.
UMass Lowell advanced to the Hockey East championship game for the second time in program history in 2009. The River Hawks came up just short, falling to the Terriers of Boston University, 1-0, in the title game.
UML reached the championship by defeating Northeastern, 3-2, in overtime in the Hockey East Semifinals, and sweeping Vermont in the Quarterfinal round.
The River Hawks lose just three players – Mark Roebothan (St. John’s, Nfld.), Mike Potacco (Kinnelon, N.J.) and Nick Monroe (Groton, Mass.) – to graduation. They are projected to return their top seven scorers, including Edwards and leading scorer Scott Campbell.
