Baseball: Jacobs, UMass Lowell Shuts Out Merrimack, 3-0

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Apr. 1, 2009) – Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) drove in two runs as UMass Lowell shutout Merrimack, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at Warrior Field.

The River Hawks have won two straight and improve to 13-6 overall and 6-3 in league play. The Warriors have dropped six of seven and fall to 10-10 overall and 1-5 against the league.

UML first got on the board in the third inning with a single run. The River Hawks added to their lead with two runs in the eighth. Merrimack was held to just two hits – one in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Jacobs knocked in the first two runs of the game for UML. His sacrifice fly in the third scored Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), who singled with one out.

Jacobs’ RBI single in the eighth was the third of three straight two-out singles for the River Hawks. His run-scoring hit followed a single from T.J. Leary (Newburyport, Mass.) and a double off the bat of Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.).

Notargiacomo scored the final UML run on a balk.

Dan White (Southboro, Mass.) made his first start and third appearance of the season, to pick up his first win (1-0). He worked five shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Matt Monico (Tewksbury, Mass.) pitched three shutout innings, allowing just one hit in relief. Dallas Nunes earned his fifth save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth.

Chris Carson (Londonderry, N.H.) took the loss for Merrimack. He allowed one unearned run on three hits in four innings. Ryan McNeil (Lynnfield, Mass.) allowed the final two runs on five hits in five innings out of the bullpen.

Leading hitter Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) collected two more hits for UMass Lowell. He was 2-for-5 on the to up his average to .408.

The River Hawks return to the field Saturday afternoon when they host American International for a doubleheader at LeLacheur Park. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.

The Warriors are next in action Saturday when they host Stonehill in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
