Freshman pitcher Jack Leathersich (Beverly, MA) scattered four hits, two walks, an earned run and four strikeouts over seven innings as UMass Lowell defeated Adelphi, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference baseball clash at William J. Bonomo Field.

With the victory, the River Hawks improved to 2-1 entering its 11-game series in Florida starting Saturday with a twin bill against Dominican College (4:00) in Santa Luces, FL.

Adelphi slipped 1-2.

Freshman 3B Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, MA) batted 2 for 4 (singles) with a stolen base while freshman RF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) went 1 for 2 with a RBI double and a walk.

Senior 1B Bill Melillo led Adelphi, hitting 2 for 4 with a solo home run. Sophomore P Keith Couch took the loss as he allowed five hits, two earned runs ad two walks while striking out four in five innings.

The victory was the first of his collegiate career for Leathersich. Sophomore Todd Bartelson (Pepperell, MA) retired all three batters in the eighth inning while freshman closer Dallas Nunes (Easton, MA) earned his first save of the season after coming on in the ninth.

The River Hawks opened the scoring in the fourth inning when junior C Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, MA) singled to centerfield to score sophomore 1B Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA). Jacobs then doubled to right field to score junior SS J.T. Leary (Newburyport, MA), who had singled earlier.

Adelphi pulled one back in the seventh inning on Melillo’s solo shot.

The Panthers threatened again in the bottom of the ninth when senior pinch hitter Mike Tobia doubled to right center and advanced to third on a fly-out by senior C Ryan Boelsen. Melillo singled, but Tobia got caught in rundown between Notargiacomo and Devlin.
