Dowling College overcame a 9-5 deficit with five runs in the eighth inning to turn back UMass Lowell, 10-9, Friday afternoon in a non-conference baseball clash at the Golden Lions Field.
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 1-1 entering Saturday’s single game at Adelphi (2:00). The River Hawks were scheduled to play a twin bill, but will play one game due to weather concerns.
Dowling improved to 3-2.
Senior 3B Tim Keene (Berlin, NH) and freshman 2B Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, MA) combined for seven RBI for the River Hawks. Devlin batted 2 for 4 with three RBI, two stolen bases and a walk while Keene went 1 for 3 with a third inning grand slam and a walk.
Junior CF Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) and senior C Graeme Clohosey (Derry, NH) each bated 1 for 3 with a walk.
Sophomore 3B Colin Barnathan led the Golden Lions, hitting 2 for 4 with three RBI while sophomore SS Eddie Squeri batted 3 for 5 with two RBI and sophomore CF Brian Ferguson 2 for 4 with two RBI and two runs.
The River Hawks trailed 2-0 after one inning but Keene belted a grand slam in the third for a 4-2 lead. Devlin, who stole two bases in the inning, drew a walk as did sophomore DH Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) and Wallace to set up Keene’s shot.
UMass Lowell added two more runs in the fourth when freshman RF Matt Jacobs (Hudson, MA) scored on a wild pitch and Devlin followed with an RBI single for a 6-2 lead.
Dowling came back in the fourth inning with three runs behind RBI singles from Squeri and Ferguson.
Devlin then highlighted a three-run sixth inning with a two-run single and junior SS J.T. Leary (Newburyport, MA) scored on a wild pitch for a 9-4 lead.
In the eighth, junior C Joe Trainor and Squeri each hit bases-loaded singles while Barnathan hit a sacrifice fly to highlight a five-run rally and take a 10-9 lead. Sophomore P Gabriel Duran retired three straight batters in the top of the ninth to seal the win.
Freshman P Nicholas Albero earned the win to improve to 2-2 as he struck out three and allowed two hits in 2.2 innings.
Sophomore Kyle Davis (Rochester, NH) took the loss (0-1), scattering three hits, five earned runs and a strikeout in three innings.
