Boris, Panarelli Lead Sweep Over Franklin Pierce, 4-1, 8-5

Freshman 1B Elyssa Boris (Gardner, MA) batted 3 for 4 with six RBI and two home runs and freshman DH Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) hit a walk-off grand slam in the nightcap as UMass Lowell swept Franklin Pierce, 4-1 and 8-5, Tuesday in a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader at River View Field.

With the wins, UMass Lowell improved to 2-13-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday’s twin bill at Bentley (3:00). Franklin Pierce slipped to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the Conference and hosts Saint Anselm Thursday at 3:00.

In the opener, freshman P Marissa Fiorentino (Tewksbury, MA) struckout 12 and allowed four hits – including only one after the second inning – while Boris hit a three-run home run in the third inning to break the game open. Fiorentino also allowed only one walk and one earned run en route to her first collegiate victory (1-4).

Boris batted 2 for 2 with four RBI, including a sac fly in the first inning to bring UMass Lowell level at 1-1.

The Ravens opened the scoring in the first behind an RBI single by sophomore 2B Emily Griffin (Leominster, MA).

Sophomore DH Hilary Hopkins (Poway, CA) batted 1 for 2 with one run and a walk.

Sophomore P Kayla Johnson (Hudson, NH) took the loss as she scattered five hits, four runs and five walks while striking out four.

In the nightcap, Franklin Pierce overcame a 4-0 deficit with five runs in the sixth inning behind a three-run shot by senior SS Stephanie Howard (Norwalk, CT) and a two-run single by senior LF Jaclyn Prybella (Marshfield, MA).

With two out in the bottom of the seventh, freshman RF Lauren Ruszkowski (Reading, MA) drew a walk to load the bases and Panarelli followed with her third home run of the season over the left field wall.

Boris replaced sophomore Nicole Monroe (Townsend, MA) in the sixth inning and allowed one hit to improve to 1-6. Monroe scattered four hits, five runs and five walks while striking out one over 5.2 innings.

Senior P Courtney Jacobs (Fitchburg, MA) took the loss (2-5) as she allowed eight runs (five earned), eight hits and two walks while striking out four.

Junior 2B Katie Hebert (Lowell, MA), who batted 2 for 4 with one run, and Boris were the sole players to hit safely twice.
