LOWELL, Mass. – Peter Onorato (Clarence Center, N.Y.) had two hits and two RBI and Ted Haley (Cranston, R.I.) struck out seven in a complete game effort on the mound as UMass Lowell defeated Merrimack, 6-2, Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 baseball action at LeLacheur Park.
The win snapped the River Hawks’ three-game losing streak. They improved to 12-6 overall and 5-3 in league play. The loss was the Warriors’ fifth in the last six games. They are 10-9 overall and 1-4 against the league.
Haley improved his record to 3-1 with the complete game victory. He struck out seven while walking just one and allowed just six hits. Only one of his two runs was earned.
UML scored all six of its runs in three innings beginning with a three-run second. The River Hawks scored a single run in the fourth and two more in the third. They had 10 hits on the afternoon.
Freshman Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Onorato followed with the first of his two doubles on the day. Onorato’s double plated two runs.
UML added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with another single run. Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) led off the inning with a single through the left side. Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) followed with a double off the centerfield wall.
Freshman Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) capped the River Hawk scoring with a two-run home run down the left field line. Onorato, who doubled one batter earlier, scored on the home run.
The Warriors broke through in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with no outs on two hits and one UML error. Ed Medeiros (Seekonk, Mass.) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly. Mike Andre (Medford, Mass.) knocked in the second run with a fielder’s choice.
Chris Pinette (Norwood, Mass.) got the loss for Merrimack, falling to 2-2 on the year. Pinette allowed six runs on nine hits over 3.2 innings.
The River Hawks and Warriors meet again Wednesday afternoon in North Andover. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
