WALTHAM, Mass. – Ross Curley (Lexington, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI as Bentley defeated UMass Lowell, 5-3, in game one of a Northeast-10 baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons have won five straight and improve to 13-9 overall and 4-1 in league play. The River Hawks have dropped two straight and fall to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in NE-10 play.
The two teams conclude the doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. at DeFelice Field.
Curley led the Bentley attack with two hits, two runs and two RBI. Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I.), who was 0-for-3, also drove in two runs.
Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, Mass.) led UML offensively with three hits. He was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Bentley, who had seven hits in the game, scored single runs in each the second and eighth innings. They broke the game open in the fourth with three runs on two hits and two UML errors.
Curley doubled in the first run of the fourth and came around to score on a throwing error after Garrett Stenhouse (Warwick, R.I.) singled through the right side.
The River Hawks were held off the board until the ninth inning when they scored three times. They had four of their 11 hits in the game in the ninth, including three straight to start the frame.
Wallace and Peter Onorato (Clearance Center, N.Y.) each had RBI hits in the ninth. Wallace’s single scored von Kriegenberg, who led off the inning with a single. Onorato plated Jared Notargiacomo (Newburyport, Mass.), who earlier doubled.
Matt Lawlor (Dracut, Mass.) plated the third and final run of the inning and game for UML with a groundout to short.
Jarrod Marchesi (Peabody, Mass.) got the win and improved to 2-2 on the season for Bentley. He allowed three runs on 11 hits with one strikeout in 8.1 innings.
Matt Sherman (Longmeadow, Mass.) earned his second save working a perfect final two-thirds of the ninth.
Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) took the loss for UMass Lowell to fall to 1-1 on the season. Ramey allowed all five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out two and walked two.
